As worn by Paul Merton. This design looks at wild animals as seen through Victorian eyes. It’s interesting, they are naturalistically enough drawn but have, let’s say – a certain naivety, as though the ferocity and power of tigers, leopards, lions has been under-emphasised. In this age I think we would slightly err to the other side – we would unconsciously accentuate those qualities. The colours are beautiful, having a kind of burnished, aged feel – our leopard glows, the jaguar is lit as though in the setting sun. Again we are looking at the world of illustration through the ages, and loving its modesty, devotion and unconscious charm.
